Deciding when your child should start primary school is a beautiful, yet sometimes daunting, milestone.

For parents in New South Wales, it can feel tricky trying to balance official age guidelines with your child’s unique pace of development. It is completely normal to wonder if they are truly ready.

In the state guidelines give families some helpful flexibility. A child may start Kindergarten if they turn five on or before 31 July of that year.

Legally, formal schooling is compulsory by the time a child reaches their sixth birthday. This gives you a clear window to decide what works best for your family.

At ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ Christian School, we believe that true readiness is about the whole child, not academic perfection. For children entering Kindergarten with us, we generally expect them to turn five on or before 31 May in their year of entry.

However, because every child is uniquely created, this age guideline is always considered alongside their individual readiness.

Rather than focusing on whether your child can read or write before day one, we encourage you to look for everyday confidence.

When observing your child's growth, it helps to focus on four simple areas:

  • Communication: Can they follow basic, one- or two-step instructions and use words to ask an adult for help?

  • Social Skills: Are they beginning to play alongside others, share with support, and take turns during simple games?

  • Emotional Readiness: Can they separate from you with growing confidence and recover from small disappointments?

  • Independence: Can they open common food packaging, manage their own lunchbox, or put on their own shoes and socks?

School readiness is gently nurtured at home in the everyday moments you already share. Reading a story together, practicing a simple morning routine, or encouraging them to carry their own bag all build a strong foundation.

There are no right answers or perfect scores, just little milestones to celebrate as they grow.
